GA HIMSS Chapter Presents
January 26, 2007 Chapter Meeting
An Overview and Update of the American Health Information
Community(AHIC) “Road Map”
&
BioSense
A National Program designed to improve the nation's capabilities
for real-time biosurveillance and situational awareness
This meeting will consist of
two exciting presentations.
AHIC :
On September 13,
2005, Health and Human Services (HHS) Secretary Michael O. Leavitt
announced the membership for the American Health Information
Community . The Community was formed to help advance efforts to
reach President Bush’s call for most Americans to have electronic
health records within ten years. The Community is a
federally-chartered advisory committee and provides input and
recommendations to HHS on how to make health records digital and
interoperable, and assure that the privacy and security of those
records are protected, in a smooth, market-led way.
The discussion will
provide an overview, and updates of the related work groups.
Presenter: Dr. Steven J. Steindel Centers for Disease Control and
Prevention (CDC)
Dr. Steven J. Steindel is the Director for Standards and Vocabulary
at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. He has a Ph.D. in
synthetic organic chemistry and a minor in quantum mechanics, and
has pursued a career combining his expertise in both laboratory
medicine and medical informatics. Since joining CDC in 1992, he has
served on numerous internal and external standards groups including
X12, HL7, SNOMED, LOINC, CCHIT, HITSP and various NCVHS
subcommittees and workgroups. He is particularly proud of chairing
the internal CDC Internet Standard’s Committee during the formative
years of the mid 1990’s and of being staff to NCHVS NHII Workgroup
since inception.
AND
BioSense:
BioSense is the
national program designed to improve the nation's capabilities for
real-time biosurveillance and situational awareness at a time when
the vast number of health-related information systems that exist
nationally vary in their ability to share data to support immediate
biosurveillance needs. By providing access to data from hospitals
and healthcare systems in major metropolitan cities across the
nation, BioSense is connecting existing health information to public
health in a way not previously possible. It is providing the
immediate, constant, and comparable information needed to inform
local, state, and national public health and to support national
preparedness.
Presenter: Lynn Steele, MS,CIC Centers for Disease Control and
Prevention(CDC)
Lynn Steele, is the Director of the
Division of Emergency Preparedness and Response (DEPR) in the
National Center for Public Health Informatics at the Centers for
Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). In her current position as
Division Director, she is also the BioSense program lead. Prior to
this position she was a senior advisor to the Director in the
Coordinating Office for Terrorism Preparedness and Emergency
Response (COTPER) at CDC.
